PRIMARY PURPOSE OR RESPONSIBILITY:
Performs as a member of the Facilities senior leadership team and serves the University through development, coordination and administration of programs, supporting sustainable practices, and advancement of sustainability at all three Pacific campuses.
1. Leads the university-wide Sustainability Committee charged with advising on establishing and integrating sustainability strategies across the institution, recommending policy, institutional goals and resource allocation, tracking related indicators and progress through assessment and benchmarking activities, and encouraging the alignment and expansion of education practices, teaching and learning, scholarship, and co-curricular activities.
Collaborates with others to identify and appoint members and develop and implement committee agenda items, projects, and subcommittees.
2. Partners with academic, co-curricular, and administrative programs in advancing concerns for environmental and social impacts alongside economic considerations.
3. Supports the development of new academic programs, initiatives, and directions that intersect positively with social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
4. Partners with staff in all divisions to identify, plan, and operationalize changes to campus facilities and operations that have positive environmental or social impacts.
5. Develops and directs programmatic activities that are led by the Sustaining Pacific program such as the volunteer student Green Team, the Pacific Gardens (Robb Garden, Bon Appetit Native Garden, Sacramento Community Garden), the Stockton Kitchen Co-op, the Stockton Green Office Certification Program, and Pacific’s April Sustainability Month.
6. Develops, allocates, and monitors the Sustainability program budget. Allocates funds to each campus for student staffing, program operations, special projects, and Sustainability Month. Ensures all direct expenditures are authorized, processed, and tracked accurately. Identifies additional source of funds beyond the base budget for Sustaining Pacific that can augment curricular, co-curricular, and facilities projects focused on sustainability.
7. Hires and directs supervision of staff and students working for the Sustaining Pacific program on all three campuses.
8. Directs operations of the Sustainability Project Investment Fund (SPIF). Markets the availability of the fund, administers the application review and award process, ensures transfer and expenditure of funds to awardees, and tracks reports on projects and impacts of fund overall.
9. Coordinates internal and external reporting on sustainability activities including Sierra Cool Schools annual rankings, AASHE STARS, and Princeton Green Guide annual report.
10. Conducts marketing and communications activities that build awareness of the Sustaining Pacific program overall using the Pacific website, social media, Sustaining Pacific overall and project specific logos, participation in campus and community events, press releases, news stories, and similar for campus and community media.
11. Represents the university related to issues of sustainability on campus and in the community in both formal and informal capacities.
12. Serves on the University Assessment Committee and other related or assigned committees.
13. Develop and manage the UoP Climate Action Plan (CAP).
14. Manage UoP’s waste, recycling, and composting programs and ensure their compliance with CAP requirements.
15. Work with the Executive Director of Capital Planning and Space Management, and the Executive Director of Support Services in ensuring that sustainable practices and programs are embedded in new building designs inclusive of architectural and engineering (A&E) components as well as in Campus daily operations.
16. Work with the Executive Director of Support Services in developing and implementing an Energy Management Plan and with Water Conservation.
17. Performs duties as assigned or requested by supervisor.
Master’s Degree in a field related or pertaining to sustainability.
Experience working with sustainability and education related issues demonstrating working knowledge and understanding of concepts, issues, and initiatives.
Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:
• Demonstrated ability, understanding of, and an interest in, advancing sustainable practices on a university campus.
• Strong ability to communicate with a diversely represented group to inform and educate. Ability to communicate with small or large groups.
• Demonstrated success in grant writing and discovery of alternative funding sources.
• Ability to create and maintain websites as well as design and deploy effective marketing and communication activities.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and staff in all divisions of a university.
• Ability to supervise and mentor students and staff.
• Ability to plan and direct programs and/or events.
• Understanding of budget development and oversight.
• Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion
Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with occasional field work and physical work associated with events both indoors and outdoors.
Work performed primarily during standard business hours with occasional evening and weekend activities.
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University’s insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
